My granddaughter has gone off to college! This is the 2nd oldest grandchild. Unlike her older brother who attends college in their hometown, this young lady is far away in Texas! Thankfully, when it came time to leave home, her mother was able to accompany her. I offered to go with her, but as it turned out, it was much better that 'Mom' went along. After talking with my daughter (late at night due to the 2 hour time difference) I realized my children are like a bridge to my grandchildren. I don't get to spend nearly enough time with my grandchildren, therefore I depend on my children to keep me updated and help me enjoy 'their' children from afar.
I guess I'll never be fully satisfied with that arrangement. However, hearing from my daughter about the 'challenges' of getting Bree settled into her apartment at this University made me happy! She's very good at getting a lot done in a short amount of time. There was much to do.
You see, this granddaughter is an outstanding basketball player who is attending college on a full-blown scholarship. It seemed like a great advantage to be placed in an apartment as opposed to a dorm room, however, the apartment needed everything from dishes to silverwear. For me to be there and have to locate the right shopping place and lug all the purchases back and forth between store and car would have been quite challenging. I'm sure it was also challenging even for my daughter and granddaughter.
God knew when he gave children to the "young" so they could be better taken care of. I admire any grandparents who are handling the duel role of being "parents" to not only their children, but their grandchildren.
Bob and I are reminded often of what a good job our children are doing with their children! We've been blessed not just with healthy, intelligent kids, but their choices in mates and ultimately their off-spring. We can watch them grow and become responsible adults without much fear for their future. So far, the oldest ones are carrying out their goals of attending colleges...and amazingly...have scholarships. This couldn't come at a better time than now since the price of "gas" is putting the crunch on everyone's budgets.
Once again I'm reminded of the scripture: "Your children will bring you much good, like olive branches that produce many olives. This is how the man who respects the Lord will be blessed. May the Lord bless you from Mt. Zion; may you enjoy the good things of Jerusalem all your life. May you see your grandchildren."
